The Codes of Legacy
A Ten-Symbol FrameworkTen Adinkra symbols that together tell the story of the human journey — identity, resilience, faith, love, transformation, and return. Each symbol represents a principle carried through generations of the African diaspora. When worn together, they form a symbolic language of remembrance and forward movement.
"These symbols were not assembled. They were recognized."
Each of the ten codes reflects a chapter Nakia Duncan has personally moved through. The Codes of Legacy was not built from research alone — it was built from testimony. The order in which the symbols appear is the order in which those lessons revealed themselves in her life. This framework was lived before it was named.
These symbols were not chosen.
They were decoded.
The Codes of Legacy is not a collection of symbols — it is a sequence. Each of the ten codes marks a stage in the human journey: the awakening of spirit, the endurance to withstand life's fires, the return to what must be reclaimed, the recognition of divine authority, the humility that tempers power, the remembrance that we belong to something greater, the love that finds its way home, the sacred act of beauty and self-regard, the shelter of divine protection, and finally the flowering of abundance. Together, these ten symbols form a philosophical arc within Adinkra Charms' interpretive framework — rooted in a visual language developed by the Akan and carried forward through the memory, creativity, and cultural life of the African diaspora.
This ten-symbol framework was articulated and named by Nakia Duncan through her work as founder of Adinkra Charms and author of Wisdom Without Words. The Codes of Legacy are expressed through the ten Adinkra symbols featured in the Legacy Bracelet and Legacy Necklace.
Each symbol. Its meaning.
Its place in the arc.
Sunsum
Spirit & Inner EssenceSpirit, character, and the invisible force that shapes who we become. The journey begins not with action but with the acknowledgment of what you already are — before the world named you anything at all.
Hye Won Hye
Endurance & ResilienceEndurance. The strength to continue when life demands more of us. That which does not burn — the imperishable thing within you that has survived every fire and remains, still standing, still whole.
Sankofa
Memory & ReturnReturning to the past to reclaim wisdom and move forward. The bird that flies forward while looking back. We cannot know where we are going until we understand — and honor — where we have been.
Gye Nyame
Divine SovereigntyThe supremacy of the divine and the presence of God above all things. Except for God — nothing existed before, nothing will remain after. A surrender that is not weakness but the deepest form of trust.
Dwennimmen
Humility & StrengthHumility balanced with strength. The ram that bows its powerful horns not in defeat but in wisdom. True strength knows when to yield — and yields without losing itself.
Abode Santann
Structure & Sacred OrderAbode Santann represents the totality of all creation — the sun, moon, water, wind, earth, and humanity. It is the symbol that places you inside the universe rather than apart from it. You are not separate from creation. You are an expression of it. This symbol carries the Akan understanding of interdependence: that all things are woven together in a continuous, living order. To wear Abode Santann is to remember your place in a story much larger than any single life — and to feel the stability that comes from that remembrance.

Love Finds Its WayLove always finds its way home. No distance, no silence, no loss is absolute. Love — real love, ancestral love — is not severed by time or crossing. It returns. It always returns.
Duafe
Beauty & Self-HonoringBeauty, care, and the honoring of self. The wooden comb — an instrument of care, of ritual, of tending to oneself with intention. To care for yourself is not vanity. It is an act of ancestral respect.
Bese Saka
Abundance & Collective ProsperityAbundance, prosperity, and collective success. Wealth is not hoarded — it is shared, multiplied, returned to the community. What is harvested together feeds everyone. This is the economics of ancestry.
Nyame Dua
Divine ProtectionA sacred place of prayer and connection with the divine. The journey closes under divine shelter. You are not walking this life alone. Every code on this bracelet has been leading here — to this truth.
